HOW TO BUILD AN ART COLLECTION

Interior notes
THE ART OF COLLECTING
Art is a language: it is a way for an artist to express themselves in a way and with an intention that speech simply does not allow. Collecting art, then, can be seen as gathering your own vocabulary to express your personal style and taste.
The thrill of finding that perfect piece to add to your collection can be slightly dampened if you don't know where to start, what pieces to add, and how to incorporate art into your home.
The secret to building an art collection is incredibly simple: accept that it’s a never-ending project. As art and interior design enthusiasts, we’ve put together an introduction to the world of art collecting and how art can be a lasting element in your current and future homes.

ON THE CHOICE OF ART
Choosing art out of love, curiosity, or enthusiasm is the key to building a collection you’ll cherish for years to come. In other words: choosing art is a matter of preference. Knowing what you like is the starting point for buying art. And the only way to know what you like is to look at art. Lots of art.
Visit local galleries and museums and try to notice the artwork you see on the street, like beautiful murals or intricate architecture. Pay attention to what draws you in and ask yourself why. It could be the color palette, the artist's strokes, or simply the motif. Also check out flea markets, as they can be a great place to find all sorts of hidden gems.

Another way to easily access different artists and their works is to do research online. Either by searching for a specific style like French Impressionism or Minimalism, or by searching for emerging artists.
Purchasing artwork from emerging or established artists can be a rather intimate process. It allows you to support the artist and their work, and it means you'll have a piece of that artist's personality and vision in your home.

DECORATE WITH ART
Collecting art is about showcasing your pieces: it is a continuous experience of organization and display, which allows you to create an interior that reflects you, wherever you are.
When decorating your home with art, ask yourself what you want the artwork to evoke: What emotions do you want to feel when you come home? A spark of excitement? Or perhaps a sense of absolute calm?

As your collection grows, the display possibilities become endless. Mix new pieces with vintage finds and heirlooms, and challenge yourself to pair different colors, patterns, and shapes.
Try to ditch the conventional ways of displaying art. Artwork can fit into any room in your home, from your living room to your kitchen. Small nooks and crannies can be the perfect setting for a smaller art print. And consider whether your artwork should even be mounted on a wall. Let the artwork lean against the wall on the floor for a more dynamic presentation of your art collection, and create small art boards on windowsills or bookcases.
Building an art collection is an ongoing process, and so is decorating with art.
The artwork you purchase doesn’t have to fit perfectly into your home. Let the art breathe and be a continuous focal point, one that you can change and rearrange so that your art collection remains a source of joy and inspiration.
