HOW TO FRAME YOUR ART

Interior notes
THE ART OF FRAMING
You've carefully selected and invested time and money in the artwork you want to display in your home. Whether it's love at first sight or you've spent hours researching color palettes and artist histories, your artwork deserves a proper display.
Take some time to think about what you want. A good place to start is by reading our guide on how to choose a frame and where to hang your artwork. Framing your artwork isn’t just about showing off your artwork, it’s also about preserving your artwork.

FRAMEWORK OF CHOICE
Purchasing a piece of art is considered the most exciting part of filling your home with art. And it is. However, choosing how to frame your new piece may end up being an afterthought, but framing your artwork is just as important as purchasing the piece itself.
The frame not only allows you to display your art collection, but it also helps protect it.
The first thing to do when choosing a frame is to consider how it works with the art print. Preferably, the frame should not distract from or compete with the artwork, but rather should enhance the colors and pattern.
A slim oak frame is an easy option that will never go out of style: it may seem like a safe choice, but it’s one that’s made for longevity. And if you get tired of your plain wooden frame, you can always refinish it – and therefore your artwork – by painting it.

You can also play with mixing and matching different materials and finishes on your frames to create movement and depth. This can be a subtle mix, such as pairing raw oak frames with a few dark stained oak frames. Or adding a single aluminum frame or pairing a few vintage frames with the more modern oak frames.
Regardless of your frame style, consider choosing higher quality frames. Glass frames are generally more durable, but for frames larger than 50 x 70 cm, acrylic may be a better choice as it is lighter.

STYLE ADVICE
If you want a more theatrical feel, take a look at vintage shops, where you will find many baroque frames. They are often gilded, but can easily be transformed with a coat of black or white paint to fit into a Scandinavian style.

A QUESTION OF TRUST
Even if your artwork has been mounted and framed to perfection, the question of where to hang it still remains. For renters and homeowners alike, the thought of hammering a nail into the wall and realizing it’s the wrong place can be quite daunting. However, if you take too much time to think about where to put your artwork, especially if you have a growing collection, you could end up with nothing on your walls for years to come.
To make the process easier, we offer to frame your art prints when you purchase a matching frame. This means that you will receive your art print framed and ready to hang in your home.

Typically, the norm in museums is to hang art at eye level, about 5 feet off the floor. But we want to encourage you to push the boundaries of where you place your artwork. Hang larger pieces on smaller walls or place a smaller piece of art slightly off-center on a piece of furniture to draw attention.
In short, trust your instincts and try not to worry about long-term investments. Playing with your collection, arranging and rearranging it over the years is part of the fun of having an art collection in the first place.

A PLACE IN THE SUN
One thing to consider when choosing where to place your artwork is the material of the artwork and the amount of natural light it will be exposed to.
When it comes to fine art printing, giclée is a printing technique that uses pigments rather than soluble dyes. Not only does this allow for a greater variety of colors and shades, it also means that a giclée print will typically last longer. This means that if your giclée print is framed using acid-free paper and backing, it will last for years, or even decades, even if hung in direct sunlight.
